Sippy cups provide a convenience and a means of pacifying; parents and caregivers often allow a child to carry the sippy cup for prolonged amounts of time,. During that time, sugary beverages other than water can pool in the child's mouth causing tooth decay. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, sippy cups are intended to wean a child off of a bottle and transition them into using a cup.
Parents often see sippy cups as a convenience, a pacifier, and a way to reduce spilling in the home. That report found that while cavities decreased among older children, cavities in two- to five-year-olds actually increased This legislation is intended to promote better oral health outcomes among infants and children. In addition to resulting in fewer cavities among young children, it is believed that as a result of increased awareness among parents about the benefits of limiting the time a child may drink from a sippy cup this legislation may result in a lower rate of dental malformations and other oral defects caused by the frequent use of sippy cups by small children.
This bill addresses the concerns raised by the Governor in his veto of similar legislation in A. The bill revises the definition of "sippy cup to exclude travel or "to-go" mugs and sports bottles. I commend Senator Thompson for pushing through this important legislation. BPAs have been linked to a range of health problems including reproductive disorders, diabetes and cancer. And because of their prevalence in the marketplace, from hard plastics to canned products, they pose a very serious threat if left unregulated.
This new law is a significant breakthrough in further protecting our children from life-threatening products and educating parents to be vigilant of the products they expose their children to.
The bill ensures that consumers can identify products that are safe for children and pregnant women. BPAs have been found to cause harmful side effects to those who come in contact with them.
Much like other substances we have placed bans or restrictions on, these toxins warrant the same response. Banning the use of BPAs in the production of bottles and cups used by babies and toddlers will protect the residents of our state who are unable to protect themselves. Today, we join with several New York counties and other states in banning the use of BPA in baby products and those used by young children. Infants and children are in most danger of this toxin because their bodies are at a crucial stage of growth and development.
